Lip Exfoliation - DIY

Last week I noticed my lips were starting to peel. There is nothing I hate most than to get that dreaded dead skin on my lips, especially because I love to wear lipstick.

I figured we exfoliate our skin why not our lips. So I went on a google and YouTube search.  After going to numerous sites and YT clips, I came up with a good recipe.

For my lip exfoliation, I mix the following together:

2 tbsp of sugar (white or brown)
1/2 tsp of olive oil
1 tsp of honey

I applied the paste mixture to my lips then rub it in a little. Then I took a toothbrush (new) and brushed my lips in a circular motion to remove the dead skin. Make sure you are being gentle when doing this step, you don't want to cause your lips to bleed.

Once I removed the dead skin, I rinsed my lips off, dried them off and applied a lip balm.

My lips were/are super soft. I will definitely add lip exfoliation to my weekly routine.

Suave Family VoxBox

I received another voxbox from Influenster!  I get so excited when I get an email saying a pre-qualify for a box.  The last box I received was back in July.

The Suave Family voxbox contained three regular size suave products for each family member.  I received the following items:

Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Deep Conditioning Shine Mask - $3.49
Suave Kids Detangling Spray - $3.99
Suave Men Active Sport Body Wash - $2.00

As many of my readers know, I have natural hair and I try to watch what I use in my hair.  I stay away from products that contain sulfate, petroleum and mineral oil.  As I do more research I also try to avoid products with any (-)cones in it.  The Moroccan Infusions Deep Conditioning Shine Mask contains most of the ingredients I try to avoid in it.  However, I did try it and I must say I did like the product *runs and hides from the natural hair nazis*

The mask has a thick texture, which I like and it smells great.  Last week I used heat on my hair for the first time in 2 years.  The mask help with bringing moisture back to my ends that I thought may have been heat damaged.

Overall, this is a good product.  I would recommend it to those who don't really worry too much about the ingredients.  For myself, I will continue to use the mask until it runs out.  However, I most likely will not  purchase this particular Suave product.  I will stick with my Suave Natural Coconut Conditioner.

I had to test the Suave Kids Detangling Spray on my hair since my girls have locs.  The spray I received came in double dutch apple scent which smells amazing.  It did it's job in detangling my hair.  Only complaint is that it contains one of the -cones.

My husband was not able to test the Suave Men Active Sport Body Wash as he stated suave body wash products break him out.  I used it on my 7 year old son with no problems.  We (my son and I) both like the smell of the body wash.

Thanks again to Influester for sending me these products complimentary for testing purposes.

Random facts about me

Just about everyone on Facebook are playing the random facts game.  When someone list random facts about themselves, you like the status and they in return inbox you a number.  You then make a status (the number they sent you) of random facts about yourself.

I though instead of listing the facts on FB, I'll just do it on my blog for my readers.

  • My initials (before marriage) spell math
  •  I'm addicted to YouTube and Pinterest.  I can literally sit on the computer all day watching YT tutorials and pinning items.
  • I used to drink 3 or more cokes a day but stopped this year.
  •  I am NOT domestic
  • I have 3 brothers and 3 sisters
  •  Two of my brothers, two of my sisters and I have 3 kids a piece
  • I am a snack queen
  •  I love documentaries on Mobsters and African-American history
  • I have been researching my family tree for years
  • I am cheap, like really cheap
  •  I'm not really into fashion, I never follow trends
  •  I don't know how to apply makeup. I'm a lipstick and eyeliner type of girl
  •  I don't feel like an adult
  •  Mexican is my favorite type of food
  •  I like to eat ice cream when it is cold outside
  •  I want to advance in my career but I don't want to manage anyone
  •  I am a huge procrastinator

Puzzl'd

This wonderful young mother I know has started an organization called Puzzl'd.  Puzzled was how Anya felt when her youngest son was diagnosed with autism.  Anya's goal is to make others aware of the early signs of autism, the trials and tribulations the parents experience and share some of the daily accomplishments of the children.

To learn more about Anya, Amari and other children with autism, check out Puzzl'd website.

Anya is also selling shirts and socks to help promote autism awareness.  Some of the proceeds from your purchase will go towards sending a child to FACE's Place Respite Care Center. FACE's provides a safe, loving, therapeutic and fun filled environment to meet the needs of children 3-12 years old who have developmental differences.

I just order this cute shirt:

Organization

As I type this post I am sitting on the floor in my bedroom in front of my closet. I am attempting to clean out my closet and organize my shoes *sigh* This is turning out to be more difficult than it should. Don't ask what the problem is because other than me not being a very organized person, IDK what is wrong.

My closet resembles what I feel the inside of my head looks like. Things thrown everywhere. And it isn't just my closet! I have clean clothes sitting on top of my dirty clothes basket and on top of my clothes bin. I get lazy and don't feel like hanging up my shirts, skirts or folding my jeans. It's something about putting up clothes that I just can't get with.

I need help with organizing and staying organized.  Once I stop staring in my closet and get off this floor, I'm going to search the web for tips. Hopefully, it is something I can stick with.

Reebok

I haven't worn a pair of Reeboks since I was in high school. I was a low top princess type of girl.

I have been looking for a pair of wedge sneakers for a while. Then Swiss Beats posted a pic of Alicia Keyes in a cute pair. I read the caption to discover it was her line with Reebok. Of course I headed over to Reebok's website to check them out.

I must say these wedge sneakers are niccce. Alicia Keys and Reebok really did a great job in the design of the sneaker.

Online Boutiques

Thanks to the internet shopping has been made a lot easier. I don't know about others but I hate shopping in a store/mall. My (self diagnosed) ADHD kicks in and I get frustrated then leave without getting anything.  I want to be able to go in a store and say I am looking for a short black leather skirt under $100 and poof there it is!  Well with the internet I can!

I distress, this post is supposed to be about online boutiques and not my shopping ADHD.

I am sure you have notice there have been a lot of boutiques popping up online lately.  Quite a few have the same styles, others are a lot more unique and you can tell the owners actually enjoy fashion.

Here are a few online boutiques that I follow and like.  Check them out and let me know what you think.

Mila and Fire - young DMV entrepreneurs

Shopping Bare

Kreative Belle - for your accessory needs

Demestiks New York - African inspired designs

Add a Little Positivity into Your Life

I have read and heard for years when you put out positive energy into the universe, you will get positive energy in return.  I am sure I am not the only one who was like yeah whatever.  I mean I believe in karma but in the negative way.  Like if you treat someone wrong, karma will come bite you in your behind.  I never really thought that karma worked in a positive way as well until recently.

These last few months, I have been working on me.  I noticed that I was somewhat negative.  I chose to see the negative side of things before the positive.  I decided that if I had something negative to say about a person, situation or whatever that I would then in return find something positive to say.  I'm not going to front and say I have changed my whole outlook on life.  I will say that I am a work in progress and I determine to live the best life possible for myself and my children.

I started to let go of a lot (not all) of past issues I had with people and started being cordial.  Some people may have an issue with it but I could care less.  As I have started working on myself, I have also noticed a lot of people I am/was surrounded by are very miserable.  Which made me think, wow people probably felt I was miserable as well.  It also made me think of how I presented myself to my children.  Was I teaching them to be negative/miserable?

As I am changing, I am noticing things are starting to look a lot better in my world.  My career is picking up, my anxiety attacks have stopped, I don't have as many bouts of depression and I am almost at my goal weight!  So I can vouch for karma...not only will she bite you in the behind but she will also bring positive things to you.

If things haven't been going right for you, maybe it is time you took a look in the mirror for the problem.

ShoeDazzle

I remember when ShoeDazzle first started, they had some okay looking shoes for a low price. Now ShoeDazzle has stepped their came up.

I follow Jeannie Mai on IG, she usually post an outfit of the day (OOTD). One day she had on these really cute sandals and stated they were from ShoeDazzle. So of course I had to jump over to their site to see if I could find them. They were sold out but I did come across a few pairs that I wouldn't mind adding to my collection.

When you get a chance head on over to ShoeDazzle! and check out their new collection.

Black Girls Workout Too

Before summer started I wanted to find a home work out program for days when I just can't make it to the gym. On InstaGram, I kept seeing people post their results from Black Girls Workout Too. Now these were amazing transformations from real people, so I decided I wanted to check this program out.  I went on Amazon to see how much the DVD would cost, it was $29.99. Now to some that's nothing but to someone as cheap as me that is a lot.  Then I read the reviews and most were saying the quality was not work 30 bucks so I decided not to get it.

Months later I got the DVD from my sister-in-law. I have to say the quality is very low BUT the workout is GREAT!!! I was sweating harder than when I am in the gym. I have decided that I will use the DVD three times a week and go to the gym three times a week. I am determined to get this body tight and toned!  I'll keep you all posted on the results.

If you've never heard of Black Girls Workout Too check out the mother/daughter duo on InstamGram @VitaminEllen and @lanagem. You can also get more information from their website.

Interviewing 101

I'm still amazed at how many 25 and older people still do not know the proper etiquette when interviewing. This is the age of technology, you can find everything online these days. If you can take the time to check your [insert social media name] then you should be able to search how to dress for an interview, how to respond to interview questions and what questions to ask the interviewee.

Too many times, I've seen folks go on an interview in jeans or looking like they're going to hit the club afterwards. Even if you are applying to be a trash truck driver, you should still dress professionally.  And I don't want to hear "maybe they can't afford a suit" because that is bull. If you can afford a pair of jeans or club clothes you can afford to buy something presentable for an interview.  I have three suits in my closet specific for interviews and I did not pay more than $50 for them. One my mother found in TJMaxx for $4 (yes you read that correct FOUR dollars.)

There are programs that sell gently worn work clothes at thrift store prices. One program I know of first hand is Dress for Success. They sell professional attire and accessories for the LOW.

When I have some free time, I'm going to create a few interview looks for women and men. I will also give a couple of interview tips like saying YES and NO instead of yeah, naw and the one I hate the most HUH.

Pancakes

Cooking from scratch is not as hard as some make it seem.  If I can do it, anybody can do it.  I don't really like to cook but I love to eat.  However, when you make your food from scratch you know what is in it.  And you don't have to worry about the high sodium intake (you control how much salt goes in) or all the other crap you can not pronounce.

Anyway, I have been making these pancakes for a couple of years now and they never fail me.  Unless, I use old baking soda :)  They are super easy to prepare, you can mix up the ingredients the night before and are ready to go in the morning.  These pancakes are way better than the box stuff and a little better for you too.

Disclaimer: I did not take the picture below.  We ate the pancakes before I thought about making this post, so I had to grab a picture from Google images.

Ingredients:
2 cups of flour
3 tbsps of sugar
2 tsps of baking powder
1 tsp of baking soda
1/2 tsp of salt
2 eggs
4 tsps of unsalted butter or vegetable oil
1/2 tsps of vanilla (optional)
1 1/2 - 2 cups of buttermilk

Directions:

Melt butter and sit aside.  Combine all the dry ingredients (it is not a requirement for you to sift them).  In another bowl slightly beat the eggs with the vanilla.  Add to dry ingredients, then add the buttermilk and melted butter.  Stir to combine but do not over mix.  The batter should have small lumps.

I usually pour the batter into a measurement cup to make it easier to pour onto the griddle.  You can also use a ladler or ice cream scoop.

Don't forget to oil your pan.

For blueberry pancakes: Fold in fresh or frozen blueberries right after you have combined all the ingredients.

Sunkissed VoxBox

It's been a few months since I've last received a VoxBox from Influenster. So I was extremely excited when I was selected to receive the Sunkissed VoxBox.

This VoxBox contained:
Dr. Scholl's For Her - $10.99
Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream - $12.99
SinfulShine with Gel Tech - $2.99
Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics - $3.99 - $4.99

This wasn't one of my favorite boxes but hey I'm receiving free products, so I won't complain.  The Dr. Scholl's for Her High Heel Insoles are really comfortable.  They pair well with my heels that are not platform pumps.  I was able to stay in my shoes all evening without my ball of my feet hurting.  I will most likely purchase this product.

I was not able to use the Olay Fresh Effects {BB Cream!}Skin Perfecting Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 because the shade was way too light for my complexion.  At this time it is only available in fair/light and light/medium.  I've heard great reviews about this product.  If they make Olay Fresh in a darker shade, I will purchase it.

The SinfulShine with Gel Tech is available in 32 shades.  I received the white shade, which I was excited about.  I have been wanting to get my toes painted white for some time now.  As soon as I opened the box, the polish was the first thing I tried.  The application was smooth but I didn't like the way it looked on my toes, reminded me of whiteout.  I did like the way it looked on my nails.  I do plan on going to Walgreens soon to try out other colors.

I thought the Goody Ouchless Ribbon Elastics were wider than they were.  They came in 4 colors; black, grey, purple and pink. The ribbons are really cute!  I used the black ribbon to hold my daughter's ponytail together.  She didn't have any problems with it.  I would probably purchase this product in the future for my daughter.

Thanks again to Influester for sending me these products to test for free!

Sloppy Joe recipe

In my house we try to make our meals from scratch as much as possible.  One day I had a taste for sloppy joes and knew that the can mess would be too high in sodium and calories.  So I went on a search for a sloppy joe recipe.  I found Spencer's Sloppy Joes on the Food Networks website.  I've made a Gina and Pat Neely recipe before, so I decide to give it a try.  This has now my go to recipe for when we want sloppy joe's for dinner.

(Please excuse the picture quality.  I don't have a professional camera, these pictures were taken with my iPhone.)

I pretty much stuck to their recipe with a few tweaks here and there.  I have highlighted the changes I made in red.  If you would like the original recipe click on the link above.

Ingredients
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
1/2 red bell pepper, chopped
3-4 garlic cloves, chopped (I love garlic, you can use the recommended 2 cloves or less depending on your preference)
1 family pack lean ground turkey
Seasoning salt, garlic powder, onion powder and ground black pepper
1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
3 tablespoons tomato paste (you can omit if you don't have it)
1 cup barbecue sauce
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Directions
Heat oil in a large skillet with straight sides. Add the bell peppers and garlic. Saute until tender, about 3 minutes.

Season ground turkey with seasoning all, garlic powder, onion powder and ground pepper.  Add the ground turkey to the vegetables. Stir and cook about 8 minutes, until the meat is no longer pink and fully cooked.

Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire, into the skillet. Stir. Simmer until thickened, about 10 minutes. Serve on hamburger bun with extra sauce.

Making time for friends

I'm guilty of not making time to hang out with my friends.  Life changed, I had kids and became a wife, in that order (some of us are backwards).  What was once an active social life became sitting in the house or running the kids around or trying to date my husband. Being laid off of work also paid a huge part in not hanging out.

Now I look on IG, Facebook, Twitter, etc and see my friends going out to dinner, lounges, and/or on vacation.  I sit back looking at their pictures thinking 1) why wasn't I invited and 2) I'm so hating right now.  I randomly had a convo with one of my girlfriends and she told me "you're never able to make any events so we stopped inviting you." That stung but it also made me think.   Why should they make an effort to keep inviting me out if I never make an effort to attend?  Why can't I go out with my friends at least once a month?

It doesn't have to always be going out to a restaurant or club.  We can meet up at someone's house and have a potluck style dinner.  There is nothing like having a group of girlfriends you can slip wine with, share your accomplishments with, who are your support system and who you could just generally have a good time with.  I miss that.

It's summer and it's a lot easier for me to get out without having to worry about my kids schedules.  So I vow to make a better effort to hang out with my friends.  Winter may be hard but I plan to at least meet up with them at least once a month.

How do you manage a busy schedule and still make time for your girlfriends?

Get it together girl!

On Saturday I attended the Jump into Summer with the DC Lady Bloggers event at Puro Cafe in Georgetown. The premise of the event was to bring together bloggers in the DMV area and have them network and get more exposure for their blogs. The atmosphere and vibes were great!   Everyone there was really nice and the food and drinks were awesome.

Attending the event made me realize I need to put more time and afford into my own blog.  When I was asked if I blogged, my response was somewhat.  It shouldn't have been somewhat considering I usually have a lot to say so I should be using this blog as my outlet.  The reason for starting this blog was to share my opinion on all things beauty related.  Those who know me, know I am generally all over the place and if you follow this blog you will see what I mean.  However, I think a lot of people will be able to relate to my posts. So from now on I will make sure I give this blog (my 4th baby) the time that she needs to flourish.

Shoutout to Franky J and friends for putting together the Jump Into Summer event.  I can't wait to attend more of your functions.

Thank you all for reading!

End of the green smoothie challenge

Yay! I not only stuck with it but I finished the 30-day green smoothie challenge!!!  Some of the changes I have noticed are: my face looks slimmer, my stomach is getting smaller and I am actually craving raw vegetables.  Last week I went on a sugar binge.  I made and ate chocolate cake, rice krispie treats and biscoff cookies with nutella.  I noticed after 3 days of eating all that sugar, I started to feel real sluggish again and I had this pain in my stomach.  I also gained 1.6 pounds :(

Now I know I really have to pay special attention to what and how much I eat.  I can still have sugar but not to the excess.  I'm still drinking my green smoothies daily and eating more vegetables and fish.  I have really changed my water intake.  I still drink a lot of water.

I am not going to post the smoothies online anymore but I will post my progress.  Here are the last of my smoothies from the challenge:

Day 23 - Spinach, mango, banana, kiwi, strawberries, pineapple juice and agave nectar

Day 24 - spinach, avocado, pineapple, mango, banana, green tea and flaxseeds

Day 25 - Spinach, flaxseeds, peaches, mixed berries, apples, banana, ginger and green tea

Day 26 - Spinach, apple, mango, mixed berries, coconut oil, green tea and almond milk

Day 27 (my husband made this one) - Spinach, kale, mint, strawberries, kiwi, pineapple, mango and almond milk

Day 28 - Kale, spinach, coconut oil, coconut water, flaxseeds, strawberries, mango, banana and pineapple

Day 29  (on the go) - Spinach, kale, strawberries, apples, pineapple, mango, banana, cherries, avocado, flaxseeds, coconut oil, coconut water and orange juice

Day 30 - Spinach, baby kale, peaches, plum, cherries, pineapple, mango, banana, avocado, flaxseeds, coconut water and coconut oil.

Another box of chocolate!

I received another box of Ferrero Rocher chocolate from Influester last week.  Because of the green smoothie challenge I've been doing, I haven't eaten one.  But my sister-in-law and son have truly enjoyed this great gift.  I had to hide the last 4 just so I can make sure I can enjoy them after my challenge is over.

Thank you again Influenster!!!!!

Green Smoothie Challenge - Week 3

I've completed week 3 of the 30 day green smoothie challenge!  I was supposed to add chai seeds, cacao powder, and chard to my smoothies this  week.  As you can tell from below, I didn't.  I went to purchase these ingredients and was shocked by how expensive they were.  I found the chai seeds at Trader Joe's for $4.99, I should have gotten them then but I though I could find them cheaper somewhere else.  WRONG!!!  I didn't see the cacao powder at Trader Joe's but MOMs and Wegmans had it for $15.99.  I've never had it before so I did not want to spend that type of money and then find out I didn't like it.  As far as the chard, I left it off my restock list and completely forgot about it.

This week (week 4) I plan on experimenting more with my smoothies.

Day 15 - Spinach, kale, pineapple, mango, banana, strawberries, flaxseeds, coconut oil and almond milk

Day 16 - Spinach, coconut water, kiwi, strawberries, mango, banana, avocado and agave nectar

Lunch - Spinach, coconut milk, 1/2 orange, pineapple, blueberries and bananas

Day 17 - (no picture) Spinach, kale, avocado, pineapple, orange, mango, banana, coconut water and coconut oil

Lunch - Spinach, almond butter, peaches, strawberries, mango, pineapple, banana and almond milk.

Day 18 - Spinach, mixed berries, green apple, peaches, banana, flaxseeds and pomegranate juice

Dinner - Spinach, pineapple, mango, peaches, kale, avocado, banana, coconut oil and coconut milk

Day 19 - Kale, kiwi, mango, pineapple, coconut water and coconut oil

Day 20 - Spinach, kale, 1/2 orange, pineapple, green apple, mixed berries, strawberries, flaxseeds, coconut oil and orange juice.  Don't let the color of this smoothie fool you, it has a great taste.

Green Smoothie Challenge - Week 2

I started my second week of the green smoothie challenge last Tuesday.  I admit I have had a few slip ups (I'm only human)  I've been drinking the green smoothies daily but I have been snacking a little. I had a chocolate chip brownie with whipped cream Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.  I've also made rice krispie treats and caramel popcorn.  I was snacking on those during the evening mostly after eating dinner.

I have notice that my dinner portions have gotten smaller and I lost 2 pounds.  This week I added kale and avocado to my smoothies.  The kale has a strong taste so you have to use really sweet fruits to cut it.  You can not taste the avocado at all but it makes the smoothies really creamy.

Hopefully, as I continue with this challenge my need for sugar will decrease.

Here are my smoothies for week 2:

Day 8 - kale, spinach, ginger, vanilla greek yogurt, coconut water, pineapple, banana, and strawberries

Day 9 - kale, spinach, green apple, cilantro, ginger, banana, lemon and almond milk

I only drunk half of this smoothie as I did not care for it too much.  The taste was good but the texture was too mushy for me.  I think what made the texture unappealing was that I put fresh lemon juice with the almond milk.  I plan on making this smoothie substituting the almond milk for orange juice or maybe water.

Day 9 lunch - pomegranate juice, vanilla greek yogurt, 1/4 orange, strawberries, banana, spinach and flaxseeds

Day 10 - spinach, blueberries, strawberries, mango and water

Day 10 lunch on the go - kale, spinach, coconut oil, pineapple, mango and coconut water (MY FAVORITE)

Day 11 - spinach, kale, flaxseeds, 1/2 orange, apple, pineapple, mango, banana and almond milk

Day 12 - Spinach, 1/2 avocado, ginger, green apple, green grapes, coconut oil and coconut water

Day 13 - spinach, kale, blackberries, strawberries, kiwi, peaches, banana, 1/2 avocado, 1 cup water, 1/4 cup coconut water and agave nectar

Day 14 - spinach, 1/2 avocado, orange juice, coconut water, coconut oil, pineapple, banana and flaxseeds

For week 3, I will add cacao powder, chard and chai seeds to my smoothies.

TIP:  A good way to store the other half of the avocado so it does not brown is to put fresh lemon juice on it, wrap it in plastic wrap really tight then store the avocado in an air tight container in the fridge.

Faux Leather Overalls

Some people may be prefer the overall trend to stay in the late 80s early 90s but I still like them. I saw these faux leather overalls on instagram. So I headed on over to the Lush Divas Boutique to check them out.

The price for the overalls are $69.00 and they are sold out of the size large.

S/N the spike wedge sneakers the model has on are pretty dope!

While on the website, I came across this faux leather skirt which I think is uber cute.  I need to add it to my closet ASAP.

The price for the skirt is $32.00.

Jeffrey Campbell Bones Chain

I follow Jeffrey Campbell  on Instagram, when they posted these yesterday I had an instant shoegasm. These Bones Chain wedge sneakers are DOPE!  I  told someone last week that I wanted a nice pair of wedge sneakers and these are it.

They are being sold on Sole Struck for $244.95.  Unfortunately, they do not have my size (insert sad face). But if you can afford the price and wear sizes 5, 7 or 9 hop on over there and cop a pair before they sell out.
